The core components are a large, perforated ring die and two or more internal rollers. The powdery material is fed into the mill and distributed evenly onto the inner surface of the rotating ring die.
The stationary rollers, pressed firmly against the die by a hydraulic or mechanical system, capture the material. As the die rotates, the material is forced through the precisely machined holes in the die.
Under high pressure and temperature (generated by friction), the natural lignins in the material plasticize, binding the particles together.
The extruded strands are cut to the desired length by external knives, forming uniform pellets.
